Rain or Shine

The People’s Garden

COMMUNITY GARDEN SPACE

at the corner of B’way and Greene Ave in BK

*Our Fundraiser Show tomorrow is RAIN or SHINE – in the event of rain we will move down the block to The Gateway at 1272 Broadway

During this 2017 gardening season, with your help, we are fortifying elements of our space that help support and provide the experience that is The People’s Garden to our neighborhood. Our goal is to replace the worn dance floor with a stronger, more weather-worthy floor…AND to replace the gasoline-fed generator that powers the music and events with solar power. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation through The Brooklyn-Queens Land Trust. Follow this link and be sure to type For The People’s Garden where you see “Add special instructions for the seller.”

We’ll keep you up-to-date with our fundraising efforts and more ways to contribute, including celebrating with us beginning with The People’s Garden Fund Kick-Off Fiesta THIS SATURDAY, MAY 6. Please join us! Details below.

The Time is Upon Us!

Brokelyn says our fiesta is one of the 20 best things to do this weekend!

Saturday kicks off with belly-dancing by Pumpernicki & Ama Diver at 2pm and ends with live salsa band, from 8—11pm…and so much in between. Raffle tickets for a growing list of neighborhood goodies (thank you, Archie’s Pizza, Cup of Brooklyn, Subway, Rudy Pastry Shop, Toad Style…) will be drawn throughout the day, ending with a Split-the-Pot drawing at 9:30pm (must be present to win). And garden members and neighbors are making food for the potluck table, which will be opened up at 6pm until we’ve eaten it all. Donations happily accepted!

Did we mention ice sculpting by Thomas Brown and live-band karaoke featuring special guests, including King Melvin and Lady Rizo? Face painting (for all ages!). Live drawing of live bands, by the stellar Michael Arthur. And more music by Mesiko and Moons of Mercury. And…a broadcast of the Kentucky Derby.

Come enjoy the garden in spring bloom…and play with us!

See you Saturday.

Our Spring/Summer series of events continues on May 19th with a beautiful evening of words and performance. Please Join Us!

For more info about May 19th, please see our facebook page!

THIS MONDAY MAY 8 friends and neighbors of the garden, along with Brooklyn Legal Services and other advocacy groups are rallying to speak out about the abuses by developers and property owners against their tenants and also how the city itself has been adjusting its stance on policy to favor developers and outside investments that continue to make the housing situation in the city less and less livable for people who do not have tons of money. At the rally tenants will share personal testimony along with other speakers. Council member Antonio Reynoso has committed to being present as well.

If these subjects are of concern to you, please join in. Everyone will meet at The People’s Garden at 5pm and enjoy a little music before moving down the block for the rally at 6pm.
