The People’s Garden Summer Series Kick-Off

The People’s Garden

at the corner of B’way and Greene Ave in BK

April 14, 2017

Greetings and Happy Spring! We began gathering and growing this email list of members and friends of The People’s Garden in 2008. Since then, many of you have come into the garden and fed the chickens, sung a song, thrown a party, and/or enjoyed a homegrown tomato. We are so happy you are here as we begin these warmer months of 2017! If you would like to become an official member of the volunteer-run People’s Garden or would like to volunteer your time or other resources in any way, come on by and speak to Hernan…or email

On April 22 when we will be cleaning the garden and preparing for the warm months. We will also be pulling out the p.a. and drums and bass amp and making sure everything is in working order, so at 7pm Ray Rizzo will host an open mic and jam, with special guest Belle-Skinner.

The People’s Garden Fund Kickoff Party

MAY 6 2017 2pm – 10:30 pm

Saturday May 6 in the Bushwick/Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn NYC, The People’s Garden kicks off a Spring/Summer series of events to raise money for The People’s Garden Fund. Organized by members of the community garden, The People’s Garden Fund Spring/Summer Series will raise money to fortify the garden’s 35+year presence in the community as a green space for gathering and culture. Acquiring and installing a solar power generator and solar powered lights and the replacing of the current 40’x36’ wooden dance floor with one made with permanent and weatherproof materials are top of the list for the garden, which often hosts birthday parties, family gatherings, live music and meetings of community organizations, and whose members aim to lighten its carbon footprint.

The People’s Garden Fund Kickoff Party will feature food, refreshments, live music, face painting, ice sculpting, sketch art, and dance by friends and members of The People’s Garden, as well as a “Split The Pot” raffle and a broadcast of The 2017 Kentucky Derby…

The People’s Garden is equidistant between the Kosciuszko and Gates stops on the JZ Train line. The steward of the volunteer-operated garden is Hernan Pagan, who in the late 1980’s joined other residents on the block to transform the abandoned lot into a place for community gathering. The People’s Garden is one of the 36 gardens owned by The Brooklyn/Queens Land Trust.
